Hooked On Her- Review and Excerpt!!

“Stacey Lynn always knows how to perfectly balance sexy and sweet.” —New York Times bestselling author Lauren Layne

Hooked on Her, an all-new fun and flirty forbidden romance from Stacey Lynn is out now!

BLURB:

Tessa Chauncy is the best kind of trouble. Beautiful, sweet and completely off limits.
I’ve sat by and watched other men drool after her and forced myself to stay in check.

Hey, I’m in the NHL... I have self-control in spades.

Except when it comes to her.

With the bat of her lashes and quick whip of that sharply pointed tongue Tessa can knock grown men to their knees. I’ve seen them wither and crumble under her confident stare— something I’m pretty sure she learned from sparring with me, thankyouverymuch.

But I’m not just falling for her. I’m down for the count.

She’s the girl I wanted, when wanting her was wrong.

She’s also my new roommate--
And oh yeah, my best friend’s little sister.

Heaven help me, I’m probably going to get his fist to my face or his hockey stick shoved
in very dangerous places for what I’m about to do, but I don’t think I care anymore.

I’m in love with my best friend’s little sister….and I’m done waiting.

My Review:
My Rating: 4 stars

Jason has been in love with his best friends little sister for years and had to watch as she dated other guys. After Tessa has just been screwed over royally by her ex she ends up going to visit her brother while she tries to decide what's next for her. Unbeknownst to her, Jason has already decided he's going to be a part of that and more than just her brother's best friend.

This was a super cute story that didn't have a lot of outside drama which I appreciated. It was realistic as Tessa found her footing with her new life and had to try to trust herself again. Jason was all in and let it be known from the beginning. He wasn't one to play games which I felt was refreshing. I loved the push and pull between the two characters as they navigated this new path between them. I have not read any of the other Ice Kings books, but was able to understand everything happening and I will have to go back and read them because I enjoyed the way Stacey wrote all her characters. The romance was sweet, there were little disputes to show that not everything is going to go perfect all the time and the steam didn't take over the story. If you are looking for a cute little read I would suggest this book!
Excerpt:

I scoop more chicken onto a folded chunk of naan and moan as I savor the taste.
There are some decent restaurants where I live, all within walking distance, which is a bonus, but none are as good as Tandor’s. I can’t even piece together what makes it so delicious but it’s mouth-watering amazing.

“Jesus, Tessa. Can you not sound like you’re having an orgasm when you eat?”

I choke on my chicken and wash it down with my water. “Don’t like it, you can leave.”

“But then I won’t be able to share with you why I’m here.”

The chicken I’ve devoured rolls in my stomach. Obviously it’s not because he’s a nice guy. I lean back in my chair. “What is it?”

He huffs a laugh and I hate he looks so damn good, smirking at me, shaking his head like I’m some amusing little thing.

“You’re cute, Tessa. I ever tell you that?”

“I think the day you took me to get stitches in my head, yeah. You bopped me on the nose with a finger and said ‘cute and tough, nice’ before ignoring me the rest of the weekend.”

I’m mortified with myself. He’s not supposed to know these things, know how much I remember every.single.encounter with him ever.

His mouth opens a bit and he stares at me. Yeah. That dose of word vomit probably surprises the hell out of him too. But hell, in for a penny. He says he doesn’t give a shit about what Sawyer thinks? He should know what I think.

“I’m pretty sure that’s the day I started having a crush on you.”

He doesn’t take his eyes off me as he chews on what I think is chicken tikki masala. Slowly, he swallows and sets his own fork down. Leaning forward, elbows on the table,

I’m tempted to drop my gaze to his mouth and watch his full lips move so sexily as he opens his mouth and asks, “Want to know when it started for me? When I started facing the reality that it was my best friend’s little sister that made my dick hard in my dreams at night and when I was on the road?”

The heart is exquisite.

You’ll never hear anyone wax poetic over an organ quite like they do the heart.

When you’re lost in the world? Follow your heart.

When your love for someone is unwavering, unparalleled and unprecedented? You give them your heart.

As a lead pediatric cardiac surgeon, I knew better than anyone that the heart is equally as powerful as it is delicate.

The heart giveth just as easily as it taketh away.

And until the day Kelly Potter darkened my doorway that was all just part of the job.

She rolled in like a slow evening storm, fierce and beautiful, fighting for the life of her unborn child.

It should have been business as usual.

I was a doctor.

Her child the patient.

But Kelly was more.

She was the one who got away.

I wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.

It didn’t matter what the rules were.

For once, I was listening to my heart.

Make Me Hate You- Review and Excerpt!!

"This is a return to the Kandi Steiner of 2016 who brought us Weightless and A Love Letter to Whiskey. Prepare for the burn." -- Author Sarah E. Green

Make Me Hate You, an angsty, emotional stand-alone romance from bestselling author, Kandi Steiner, is live!

BLURB:

If he kisses me right now, I’ll drown.

Every sip of air is shallow and burning, because in the arms of my best friend’s brother,

I’m the closest I’ve ever been to sin.

His eyes flick to my lips, and I remember the first time I tasted him, seven years ago before I left this town and vowed never to return. His hands grip my waist, and I remember the pain when he rejected me, when my entire world crashed down at his command. His jaw clenches, and my senses come alive with one stinging reminder.

I’m not his to kiss, and he’s not mine.

I tried to stay away from Tyler Wagner, putting an entire country between us. But when his sister’s wedding brings us back to the same town, to the same house, I can’t avoid him, no matter how hard I try.

He’s always there, his dark eyes bewitching, luring me into their depths. The memory of us pulls me under like a rip current, and when he flashes that smile, I lose my breath, along with my will, unable to escape his grip and find the surface.

Now, hours before our plus ones arrive for the wedding, I’m in his arms, begging him to make me hate him, knowing he never could.

If he kisses me right now, I’ll drown.
And I’ll take him down with me.

My Review:
My Rating: 4 Stars

Jasmine hasn't been back to her hometown in 7 years, until her best friend's wedding. Now Jasmine has to go face her past and come face to face with Tyler Wagner, her best friend's brother, and the one who broke her heart. While she's there helping Morgan plan her wedding, she can't escape Tyler, but he's not hers and she's not his. Both have significant others, however the past was never really resolved and therein lies one of the many issues between the two.

I want to preface this by saying I usually don't like books that deal with cheating, but it was a best friend's brother story and right now that's what I am into. While this story is told in Jasmine's point of view I wanted to know what Tyler was thinking throughout the whole book, but I enjoyed going into Jasmine's head. This book did discuss the past a lot and I think if the author wouldn't have done it I don't know if you would have understood the emotions and the feelings between Tyler and Jasmine. I liked that the significant others weren't bad people because than that would make if they cheated okay. It was angsty and raw and even though I don't agree with everything Jasmine and Tyler did, I felt like I understood why they made the choices they did when they made them. For me that's an important part of a story because if you can't understand the characters motives you can't connect to the characters. Jasmine and Tyler weren't portrayed as perfect and they had flaws and made mistakes but in the end it was okay because it make them realistic.

I started this book at 6 am and except for getting breakfast and showering it kept me captivated. I haven't read Kandi Steiner before so signing up for this arc I was a little hesitant, but I am so glad I gave her a chance because I will definitely be checking out more of her books.
Excerpt:

Seven miles and an hour later, and all the anxiety I’d felt the night before was completely gone.

At least, until I rounded the foyer into the kitchen and saw I wasn’t the only one up early on Sunday morning.

Tyler sat at the kitchen island, still in his navy blue sweat pants and simple white t-shirt, with one foot planted on the ground and the other hooked casually on the lower bar of his stool. His hair was an absolute disaster, the boyish waves sticking up this way and that. He had both hands wrapped around a mug of hot tea, his eyes focused on the iPad he had propped up in front of him, and BlueTooth headphones in his ears. At first, he didn’t notice me, and I slowed my steps, standing silently at the entry of the kitchen and watching him. I’d done everything I could last night to avoid his gaze, to not
look at him, and now that I had a stolen moment to observe, I found my chest tightening again, my mouth dry and sticky.

His brown eyes were hidden beneath bent brows, expression serious as he watched whatever was on the screen. Small lines creased the edges of his eyes — lines that weren’t there when we were kids. He’d grown into a man somehow, overnight, it seemed. Then again, it had been years.

I’d seen him on social media, watched from afar as his YouTube channel took off. I’d seen pictures of him on Instagram — traveling through Europe, hiking in Australia, swimming in hot pools in Iceland. I didn’t follow him, of course, but his profile was public, which allowed me to flip through picture after picture on the nights when I was a pathetic mess.

But, pictures and videos didn’t do justice to the actual man who sat studiously at that kitchen island.

He was something between the boy I used to love and the man I’d never know, familiar and unreachable all at once.

Tyler shook his head at something, letting out a frustrated sigh and kicking back the bar stool a little before taking a sip of his tea. His eyes flicked to me then, back to the screen, and then, he did a double take, this time fixing his gaze on me and leaving it there.

Something changed in his eyes when he looked at me, like a shadow passed over them and held him captive. I was dressed in jogger shorts and a modest tank top, but from the way he watched me, I might as well have been completely naked. That’s what his gaze did to me, what it always had done.

It stripped me bare.
About Kandi:

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed it to her classmates.

Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a diehard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer, and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

My Review:
My Rating: 4.5 Stars

Bronte is a single mother whose only son is being mentored by Drew Amherst, the same rock star guy she had posters of hanging up in her room. Drew has his own baggage and guilt to contend with, but after meeting Bronte wants to help her get her "groove back." It's only supposed to be a week and he has 3 conditions: "No strings attached, no falling in love and it's only seven days." The only problem is that Drew isn't only attracted to Bronte, but the more he learns of her fun personality the more he likes her.

I enjoyed the characters of Bronte and Drew. Bronte had to grow up fast after getting pregnant in high school and then after having three kids her husband left her to raise the kids on her own. She's insecure about her self, which is sad but very realistic. I loved watching her open up and become the woman she wants to be. Drew has a lot of guilt over his past and while he tries to hide it from Bronte and only focus on her, he ends up opening up to Bronte. I also loved watching Drew with Bronte's youngest daughter Amelia and dealing with the life of a teenager. If you read the other Seaside books there are cameos of the other characters and even a group chat that will have you chuckling. There were quite a few times my sister looked at me because I was giggling so much while reading this book. If you are looking for a funny, sweet, low level drama book then this is a book you must read! I would recommend you read at least Provoke as that is Braden's story. Braden is Bronte's son and where Bronte and Drew first meet each other. You don't have to read the other books, but I do think you should read all the Seaside Picture books if you haven't because they are all great!
Excerpt:

He rested his chin on my head as his arms slid around the front of mine, and then he slowly turned me toward the shoreline. The sun had painted the sky in streaks of purples, pinks and oranges as it slid toward the ocean. I’d never paid much attention to sunsets, but the combination of brilliant color in the sky above and intoxicating male behind was showing me what I’d been missing. His body was hot against mine.

“Thought you might want a minute after digging so hard.”

With the sun setting, it should have been growing cooler, right? But here I was, my entire body on fire. “Are you mocking my hyperfocus?” I asked, unable to keep the wobble out of my voice.

Pressed against my back, his chest rumbled with a laugh. “No, actually, you just looked so damn cute and were concentrating so hard that I felt guilty for staring at your ass and decided, rather than staring, I was going to do something about it.”

I frowned. “And what did you do?”

“I’m doing it now,” he rasped, his lips next to my left ear. “I’m holding you and watching the sunset.”

Stiffening, I swallowed hard. “Oh.”

“Don’t get tense.” He continued his assault on my senses as his lips roamed down my neck. “I just want you to enjoy yourself. No pressure. I’m not going to suddenly strip you naked against the sand and propose, all right?”

Though my emotions still churned, I exhaled.

“Plus, I mean, I left the ring at home so—”

I drove my elbow back, connecting with his stomach. He let out a grunt and then laughed again.

His teasing made me smile, but it was his warmth that had me feeling safe, as if maybe, just maybe, I could let loose a little bit and simply enjoy the wind on my face, the way his body wrapped around mine protectively — something I’d never once in my life experienced, not even when I had been married. Maybe I could enjoy the laughter around me and not constantly wonder where it all had gone wrong in my life, how I’d been brought to this moment in time — almost forty, with kids nearly grown — wishing I could have at least once experienced the sort of romantic love people wrote songs about, fought for, maybe even died for.

The sun finally disappeared below the horizon, blanketing us in dusk, and the temperature immediately dropped a few degrees.

I didn’t want to move, but I knew we needed to build a fire, so I reluctantly started pulling away only to have Drew keep me locked in place. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t finished watching.”

Huh? Confusion clouded my mind, and I shifted to get a look at him, but he held me in place. “But… the sun set already…”

“You think I was watching the sun the whole time? How adorably wrong.” His nose trailed down my neck up and down, and then his teeth nipped my ear, causing shivers to erupt all over my skin. “I was watching you watch it, and I’ve never seen anything so awe-inspiring as a gorgeous woman watching the sunset for what seems like the first time.”

That is, until she finds out that Shane Beckett lives next door.
Shane Beckett, the handsome and charismatic high school star quarterback who smashed her heart. The lying, cheating player who was supposed to be long gone, living the pro football dream and fooling women into thinking he's Prince Charming. Shane Beckett, who is as attractive as ever and flashing his dimples at her as if he has done no wrong.

Scarlet makes it abundantly clear that old wounds have not been forgotten. Neighbors they may be, but friends they most certainly are not. She won't allow herself to fall for the single father and firefighter again, no matter how many apologies he offers, how many times he rushes to her aid, or how hard he makes her heart pound.
But as she spends more time with him, she begins to fear that maybe she's wrong.

Maybe Shane has changed.

And maybe this time she's the one playing herself—out of a chance at true happiness.

My Review:
My Rating: 2.5 Stars

Scarlet just moved back to her hometown after 12 years to teach middle school. She bought the house she always admired when she was younger and who could be her next door neighbor but Shane Beckett, her ex. She thought he had moved away and was playing football, but now he's a sexy, single father and a firefighter. How can she resist?

There were quite a few things I didn't are for, but what I did like was Shane. He was mature, put his child first and tried to do the right thing as an adult. I thought the kid was for the most part a true representation for a kid his age. There were a few moments I actually did like Scarlet, but they were few and far between. I think I just didn't understand her a lot of the time. I liked some of the side characters, but wish they would have been flushed out more.

I wanted to love this story, but I just didn't. I felt Scarlet was too whiny and acted super immature for her age. I didn't feel the connection she had with Shane from high school. I wish the author would have shown us more glimpses of how they were in high school because I didn't feel Shane's betrayal as more than just him being a stupid teenager. I wish we would have seen more of Scarlet and her mom's relationship. I didn't understand how Scarlet flipped so much when she went to college as to how she was in high school. I would have liked the author to make this dual point of view so we could see Shane's point of view through this story because at times Scarlet gave me whiplash with her emotions and I would have liked to see what Shane thought of everything. I felt the ending was rushed and would have benefited from an epilogue or a few chapters to make it feel less abrupt.

Overall, this book was not bad but it wasn't what I thought it was going to be. There was a lot of drama that I think took precedence over the second chance romance. As I said before though not every person is going to like the same books and this one just didn't have me connect to the story or characters as much as other books I've read.

Hooked on Her-Sneak Peek!!!

Hooked on Her, an all-new sexy and flirty, forbidden romance from Stacey Lynn is releasing June 23rd, and we have the first sneak peek!
SNEAK PEEK:

While Tessa gapes at me like a fish, frozen to her spot, I take advantage of her shock and step through her brother’s front door and curl my hands around her shoulders, gently placing her to the side so I can enter.

She’s standing in front of me in a pair of black sweats that bunch at her ankles and a pale pink tank top with straps so thin I can see a strap of her bra peeking out from beneath on her shoulder. Her hair is piled on her head and I don’t think she has a speck of makeup on because I can see freckles dance across the bridge of her nose.

She’s also never been sexier.

“Tessa.”

It comes out on a groan and since she’s still gaping at me, I step forward. Another step. I move slowly, give her time to realize what I’m about to do and she either wants it as much as me, or she’s in some serious shock.

I reach out my hand and slide it to her neck where her pulse vibrates beneath my palm.

“Jason—”

“Don’t tell me to stop.”

Want more? Continue reading → https://bit.ly/2Bb9PYd

Lyric is the new road manager for the band that Wolf plays after just being betrayed by her ex boyfriend who is also a rock star. As soon as Lyric and Wolf meet the chemistry explodes, except Lyric won't be falling for another rock star, thank you very much and Wolf is not looking for a girlfriend. Lyric has grown up with music and while Wolf is the typical rock star, once you peel back the layers you realize Wolf is anything but average.

I enjoyed watching the two get to know each other and fight their attraction and feelings. Through music, lyrics and being around each other the two become closer until it gets harder to try and fight why they shouldn't be together and get together. The only problem is that both have pasts that have shaped them into who they are and there are still secrets between them. Will they learn to trust each other or is it for nothing? After all, trust is hard to give someone after you've been betrayed and without trust your relationship is doomed to fail.

This story focuses mostly on Lyric and Wolf, but the secondary characters help move the story around. I enjoyed meeting the other band members and the other characters. There is one character who I knew right away was bad news, but I didn't know they would go as far as they did! Sorry not giving away anything spoilerish! I did not read these books before this duet was release, but one of the great things about this duet is that it has an extended epilogue and a missing scene at the end. K.K. Allen's writing will suck you into her world and then keep you there until you are finished with the book. I will definitely keep requesting arcs from this author!

Winning Hollywood’s Goodest Girl- Review and Excerpt!!!

A baby on the way first.
Then love and marriage?
It’s complicated on its best day.

Winning Hollywood’s Goodest Girl, an all-new not-to-be-missed, surprise baby romantic comedy standalone by New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe is available now!

BLURB:

Raquel and Harrison sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

First comes love.
Then comes marriage.
Then comes a baby in the baby carriage.

That’s how her brother used to sing it when we were kids—a simple ploy to get under my skin and make me stick my fist in his face—but man oh man, did he get the order wrong.

One night of “kissing” in New York catapulted us straight to the pregnancy portion of the song—surprise!—and now I have to figure out how to carry out the whole melody in reverse.

A baby on the way first.
Then love and marriage?
It’s complicated on its best day.

But our situation is far more problematic than just a simple twist of nursery rhyme lyrics.
Before our night together, Raquel Weaver was the best-known good girl in
Hollywood—a twenty-nine-year-old sexpot virgin whom the world adored and watched like a hawk.

Obviously, the consequences of that kind of reputation don’t just go away. Add in pregnancy hormones, the media, a fake fiancé, and a selfish manager, and you have the short list of my problems.

As a thirty-four-year-old, successful CFO of a multibillion-dollar media conglomerate, I thought I would be able to handle anything show business could throw my way, but I’m starting to think I might be in over my head.

Good thing I’m all in.

Winning Hollywood’s goodest girl is going to take everything I’ve got.

My Review:
My Rating: 5 Stars

Raquel Weaver is a name everyone knows as a 29 year old Hollywood starlet virgin. While she's in New York she runs into a old childhood friend Harrison and one thing leads to another and now she's pregnant. Harrison does not keep up with Hollywood and so doesn't know about Raquel's fame and instead treats her like a normal person, something she hasn't been in a very long time. After finding out he's going to be a father Harrison decides he needs to go see Raquel and find out about everything. The two now have to try and navigate becoming parents while balancing Raquel's fame.

I absolutely loved this book. Harrison is a great guy who stands next to Raquel in her choices of her stardom. He is sweet, understanding and just wants to be the best dad he can be to his child! How can that not be swoon worthy let alone all the crap he puts up with without losing his temper! Raquel drove me absolutely crazy at times! There were multiple times I wish she would just stand up for herself and got frustrated with her, but when you are in the position she was in and long as she has been it made sense. Every time she stood up for what she wanted I was happy. She grew as a character and became a stronger woman.

I loved the cameos from the other billionaire guys such as Cap, Thatch, Kline and their better halfs. I also enjoyed that we heard Raquel's point of view of her brother who I met in Taming Hollywood's Baddest Boy. This book can be read as a standalone so if you have not read a Max Monroe book than you will still enjoy the story. This story is hilarious and swoon worthy.

Excerpt

Harrison

Never cry over spilled milk.

That’s what my mom always said, but I have to admit, until today, I never paid it much
attention. As a kid, I spilled shit all the time. Milk. Juice. Water. If it was liquid, I was splattering it
all over fucking creation.

Our mop got a lot of action, sure, but every time, my mom would simply laugh. Not a little, demure giggle, but big, uproarious belly laughing. Ellie Hughes thought life was made for living, and she’d be damned if she let me dwell in the valleys. Hell, maybe that’s why I was always wreaking havoc on all of our flooring—my accidents were a precursor to something upbeat.

Anyway, I haven’t thought much about all those puddles of laughter in a long time. But today is proof positive: my mom—well, she was a teacher way ahead of her time.

Cereal poured and the financial section of the New York Times in hand, I make my way
to my circular, glass kitchen table and take a seat that faces the TV.

Hello, Today!, the syndicated fluff show during the eight o’clock hour on TBC, prattles on about the perfect Christmas breakfast for a family of four while an obnoxious elf bounces around in the background. I roll my eyes as some celebrity—fuck if I know who it is—pretends to know how to make frittatas and turn my eyes back to the paper.

Growing up, television was forbidden fruit in my childhood home. My hard-ass of a dad thought it was more important to read the Wall Street Journal and understand the stock market than watch what he called drivel. He was one of those top 1% people, and his power-wealthy position in life included uber-rich hedge funds, strategic million-dollar stock market swing trades, and a money-hungry mind-set.

The only time the one television—I’m serious, one fucking TV—in our home was actually used, it revolved around big news conglomerates and State of the Union addresses by current presidents.

But despite the old man’s eccentric views on television and movies and normal people’s forms of entertainment, I can’t deny that learning about the stock market at an early age and being forced to understand things like the global economy and trade deals has served beneficial in adulthood.

My morning routine normally synchronizes beautifully for an all-out news download before heading to the office. But today, because of a late dinner meeting last night and too many Christmas-themed cocktails that have nothing to do with the holly-sprig adorned ones on TV, I’m running behind schedule.

The great news is, as CFO of one of the largest media conglomerates in the world, I’m actually allowed to do that on occasion without getting docked on my time card. In fact, I haven’t seen an actual time card in ages. The only punching I do is at Tommy John’s Kickboxing on Wednesdays in a basement studio all the way over on 75th and Broadway.

In the interest of full punching disclosure: I suck at it. Mohammad Ali in training, I am not.
But flab is real, friends, even for the studly men in your life, and punching a bag with little to no
precision keeps the excess weight off me. In layman’s terms, it keeps the ladies from grabbing
on to anything other than muscle in bed.

Ha.

Scratch that last line. They grab my dick; I didn’t mean to make it sound like they don’t. There’s actually more penile touching than any other kind of touching in the cottony comfort of my sheets, and I’m very good at touching the ladies, in turn, with my mouth and penis. In fact, when my dick hears the words dick pic, it asks for photo credit because it was most certainly the one taking the picture.

Okay, maybe I’ve gotten a little carried away, but my point is the same.
What I meant to imply was that they don’t grab on to a beer gut—and trust me, if I didn’t work out, they would. I love beer and chicken wings, and I indulge in them both on way too many occasions to maintain some kind of quota weight “naturally.” If it weren’t for all the strenuous, practically nightly kickboxing workouts, if I were a woman in the public eye, I would be a constant ludicrous headline for my “fluctuating waistline.” Thankfully, I am trim, toned, and able to binge on buffalo wings whenever the fuck I want.

My cell vibrates across the table, and I snag it off the glass surface to see Incoming Call Cap flashing on the screen. I sigh at the idea of listening to Caplin Hawkins’s bullshit before I’ve finished my first cup of coffee, but I answer it despite my better judgment.

“Harrison, you sly motherfucker, those stock tips you gave me last quarter have my portfolio growing green like I’m a damn cannabis farmer.” He forgoes a greeting and dives straight into what is most likely his selfish needs. “Should I be concerned you’re getting insider info?”

“Wow, it’s so great to hear from you too, bud.” I smirk and lick my finger to get traction on the thin paper and flip through the pages until I get to yesterday’s closing data for the Dow Jones and S&P 500. Quickly, I scan through the numbers. It’s only one week away from Christmas and a few weeks away from New Years’, and this month’s upward trend appears fairly optimistic for avoiding a choppy close to the year.

“Yesterday, HawCom was up five-fucking-percent. Seriously, dude, are you dragging me and my father’s company into some illegal bullshit?” he asks, and I look away from my newspaper to roll my eyes.

HawCom is the company I’ve been with for the past decade, and it just so happens to be owned by Cap’s father, Jared Hawkins. Financial management for a company of its scale has been tricky these days with the ongoing uncertainty of the market, but all in all, HawCom’s performance numbers have been stable and steadily growing for the last nine quarters. As a major media company with “silent” ownership in some of the world’s most relevant technology companies, it’s not completely unexpected, but it’s certainly not guaranteed.

“Is it difficult being the most ridiculous bastard on the planet?” I retort. “Because, fuck, I can imagine it gets hard coming up with new ways to be this insane.”

Despite this idiot’s stupid question, everything I do is by the book. No insider trading. No fraud. It all comes from a mind that’s been trained since childhood to be strategic and understand economic patterns.

And even if I shouldn’t, for the state of my motivation to maintain a certain work ethic, I do allow myself to take a little credit for HawCom’s success. I’ve been charged with a large job due to my leadership role in the company, but I cherish the opportunity. It’d be hard not to with an uncharacteristically kind and charismatic boss like Jared at the helm.

And for the last four months, I’ve made it a point to cherish everything.
See, I choose to be happy every day.
I choose gratitude and intention in my every action.
I choose the way my life plays out—all of us do.
It took me more than three busy, painful decades and the loss of both parents to figure that out, but now that I have, the freedom in it is impressive.
The truth is, until we die, all of us get to choose our own destiny—

“I swear to God,” Cap grumbles. “I will end you if I wind up in some kind of high-security prison for stock fraud.”

I laugh at the absurdity. “I help you grow your portfolio—without commission, mind you—and you’re threatening murder?”

“Are you deflecting, son?” he questions, always the fucking lawyer. “Because I swear on every-damn-thing, I will—”

“Relax.” I snort. “The only thing illegal about the stock tips I gave you was the fact that I handed them to you on a silver-fucking-platter without asking for anything in return.”

“Speaking of handing shit to me on a silver platter, let’s do that again,” he says, a cunning smile apparent in his voice. “Who is looking profitable for the first quarter of next year?”

“And why should I give you anything, you prick?”

“Because you love me. Because you don’t want to see me become a vagabond, living on the streets.”

“You’re one of the most successful corporate lawyers in North America who already has some of the world’s best advisers handling his money. I’m pretty sure a lack of financial investment advice from me isn’t going to break your bank.”

“Minor details.” He chuckles. “C’mon, dude. Help your best friend and his sweet, lovely, beautiful wife out.”

“Now you’re bringing Ruby into this?” I tsk. “For shame.”

“You and I both know, shameless or not, I’ll do whatever it takes to get what I want,” he retorts, and I laugh outright.

“Are you wanting stock tips or to get me into bed? Because, truthfully, it feels like it could go either way at this point.”

Of course, he doesn’t miss a fucking beat. “I’ll even toss in a candlelit dinner and champagne if that’s what it’s going to take.”

Just for the sake of ending this insanity, I start to open my mouth with a few companies that are worthy of investments in the upcoming quarter, but a shrill voice on the screen of the TV steals my attention. I wouldn’t normally refer to any woman’s voice as shrill because I find it incredibly sexist and demeaning, but I’m telling you, for the sake of painting an accurate description, this particular voice, regardless of its bearer’s gender, is like the distress call of a wounded rabbit. I couldn’t miss it if I were in an underground bunker with six feet of sound-dampening dirt between us. And somehow, somehow, she still made it on TV.

“Thanks, Chris,” she continues, her voice still painful to my ears. “Today is anything but business as usual in sunny Southern California. It seems, folks, that the impossible has happened. Hollywood is abuzz this morning with the most infamous immaculate conception since the Virgin Mary herself.”

My eyebrows pinch together at the ridiculous drivel as I lift the spoon to my mouth. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph must be rolling over in their graves.

“Twenty-nine-year-old famed virgin sexpot, Raquel Weaver, was photographed leaving Beverly Hills Obstetrics today with a noticeable bump front and center on her normally trim figure.”

Brakes squeal to a stop inside my head.

What the fuck? Did she just say Raquel Weaver?
I gape at the television, trying to make sense of why that name of all names just came out of Screechy’s mouth, but the instant a photograph pops up on the screen and all-too-familiar violet eyes stare back at me, I have my fucking answer.
Holy shit. It’s her.
